Driftwatch (www.driftwatch.org ) is a voluntary online registry program for sensitive crop producers to communicate with pesticide applicators their field locations using Google Maps™. Knowing the sensitive crop location, pesticide applicators can take precautions to avoid potential drift problems and avoid unwanted crop injury. Commercial growers of sensitive crops with a minimum of a half acre in production register their fields and indicate their location on the state Google Map. Pesticide applicators registering on Driftwatch have the option of indicating their designated service area and to receive automatic notification of new crop registries within their area. Driftwatch registration information is managed by data stewards that provide data integrity by verifying and approving submissions prior to their posting on the Driftwatch map. In 2012, the Minnesota Department of Agriculture is entering its second year in partnership with Indiana’s Driftwatch program. For 2012 sensitive crops that can be registered are certified organic farms, fruits, grapes, pumpkins and melons, tomatoes and vegetables. Presently Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin are participating in Driftwatch. Funding for Driftwatch was made possible by the US Environmental Protection Agency.
